Tour # 1: Shirakawago Ogimachi Village Half Day Tour from Takayama

Picture
  • Take a stroll through the village of Ogimachi and learn the history behind this wonderful UNESCO world heritage site. This is the largest village and main attraction of the Shirakawa-go region. Explore its storied streets, and admire their traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, some of which have been there for as long as 250 years. The name of these distinctive farmhouses translates to "constructed like hands in prayer," because of its resemblance to a Buddhist monk's hands pressed together. They're built to withstand heavy snowfall, and they become especially beautiful once their thatched roofs become coated with fresh snow. Today, these farmhouses serve as inns, museums, minshukus (or Japanese-style bed and breakfasts) and guesthouses. People flock here each year to bask in the village's fantasy-like atmosphere and rustic sensibilities. You can experience the same by simply booking and taking the inclusive round trip bus transfer from Takayama to this magical and historical site.

Tour 3. Takayama and Shirakawa-go Day Trip from Nagoya

  • Are you in the magnificent city of Nagoya and you want to see what lies beyond it? Book through Klook and go on a day trip to see the city of Takayama and the village of Shirakawa-go. The former is found in the Hida region in the Gifu Prefecture. Takayama may be considered a city, but it’s not the kind that people are accustomed to. The houses and the buildings are all traditional, especially in its Old Town. You can go for a walk around the area and admire the architecture and its historical landmarks, like the Higashiyama Walk and the Takayama Jinya. You’ll be given some free time to have lunch in the city, so make sure to bring some cash and try out dishes made using top grade Hida Beef. Shirakawa-go on the other hand is known for the numerous gassho zukuri houses that are lined up all around it. These houses are over a hundred years old and their design is said to look like the clasped hands of monks in prayer. After visiting these quaint and picturesque places, you’ll be taken to the Toki Premium Outlets for some leisure time. There, you can go shopping for souvenirs to commemorate your trip. If you’re looking to see the rural wonders of Japan, then going on this trip is a must.
